CITIZENS FOR KINGSTON DOG
PARKS
We are a group of Kingston Citizens dedicated to the establishment of designated off-leash dog parks/areas in the City of Kingston. Most cities in the area have already taken this very important step to insure the health and safety of our companion animals, Kingston now needs to follow suit. Dogs are very social animals. Close cousins to the wolf, they live in packs and have a very well developed communication system. Like all social animals, including humans, dogs require companionship of other dogs to remain psychologically well and healthy. In view of the social nature of these animals, condemning them to a life on leash is nothing but pure cruelty. Currently By-Law #8 in the City of Kingston requires all dogs to be on a leash no longer then 6 feet unless they are on private property. What this means for the dog is that unless they have the good fortune of living in a house with a backyard in a multi dog home they will have no chance to run and play with others of their kind. Of course not everyone has the possibility of offering this kind of environment but do want the love, companionship and security a dog can provide. A dog that is always on a leash is not well socialized and as a result does not have a chance to develop proper communication. These dogs often are aggressive when frightened because the leash keeps them from being able to run away. Dogs kept tied up often develop behavioral problems that few people can handle, and eventually end up at the Humane Society. Help us prevent this needless suffering. Help CKDP to establish safe places where our furry family members can be themselves!
